Loneliness is not a synonym for sadness, depression, or the lack of human direction. It is a wonderfully purposes decision of peace, tranquility, and a moment of introspective thoughts connecting to the universe. It is a blue print of what is to come next.

Loneliness is riding on AMTRAK through the valleys and over the mountains of West Virginia on a foggy morning in the heart of winter; baring trees adjacent to a rocky stream, where wild ducks and deers share a brief moment of watching their reflections and I see the reflection of the train and the few branches popping up near the huge rock stones that balances nature.

Loneliness takes my mind's eye under the stream watching the fish watching the fishermen watch them as they play "Catch me if you can."

Loneliness is seeing that old dysfunctional Caboose that I longed for as a child to ride as it would bank around the tracks behind our house in Berkley. I often ran down the tracks behind never catching it, but seeing it fade into obscurity, singing "Little Red Caboose."

Loneliness is flying over the Atlantic Ocean and wondering as I wandered an effort to retrace the Transatlantic Slave Trade route; wondering who I would have lied beside and "why-come" we had the same dreams yet we were of different tribes. Did we find peace and comfort by staring into each other's soul? Did we know that we were lonely or we alone thought that we were just alone?
Walking on the white sandy beach in Basseterre, I watched the "children-dem" play in the turquoise water while I threw rock stones that gently skimmed as I had another peaceful dream without interruption all alone. I was lonely and loneliness smiled.

Liat had sixteen, I only my seat belt and my individual package of peanuts with my face pressed upon the window pane. No one bothered me as the turbulence scared me and I had no one to hold because I was all alone. Within minutes Liat lowered itself over the Frederiksted Pier giving hope of being alone to eat conch in butter sauce at Pier 69 and dance tomorrow on Pelican Cove.
In the crowded unpacked dusty streets of Gbarnga where hundreds gathered to pray on their knees, I was the only one still walking around in the unsupervised open market. Waiting one hour to buy provision and two live chickens and to ride back in a small Datsum cab filled with six passengers, livestock inside and on the top, and assorted aroma of nature within the cab. We all smile with our eyes and captured our own world alone.

Riding through the Rockies, seeing the rough beauty, breathing the soft beauty of Glacier Park, and the keen imagination of Flagstaff is a loneliness that I long to return.

Loneliness is sailing down the Charles River after a Clam bake but only to discover that t lobster was the meal. However, the ultimate loneliness was sitting on Miller Beach and seeing the Chicago skyline; singing fahrenheit, feeling centigrade. However, the best loneliness that I have ever experienced was being able to see the sunrise and sunset on the same day. It was the wonderful mystery of the island of Saint Croix.
