Unexpected Travel DilemmasBY: Jason Bader | Category: TRAVEL TIPS | Submitted: 2011-02-21 08:43:02
You would be hard-pressed to find someone who can honestly say that they don't like challenging. It is something that is deeply ingrained into our species. Since man has been around, we have been constantly exploring the world around us, trying to understand exactly what we are a part of. But just as the Voyageurs ran into difficulties during their travels, modern day travellers are also faced with unexpected predicaments. Here we will go over a some of the things you may consider planning before your trip in order to ensure that it is the best vacation of your life. Insurance, Insurance, Insurance This point can't be stressed enough. You don't really realize just how important visitor travel insurance is until you or someone in your party falls ill while in a foreign country. Getting medical care at home can sometimes be difficult enough, so just imagine what it is like in a strange and unfamiliar place. And if you don't have visitor insurance, you will be footing the bill for what could be an extremely expensive endeavour. Every country's health care policies are different, so it is important to research what you are getting into beforehand. And then, find an insurance policy that covers everything you could possibly need. The most important aspects are funding for emergency surgery, overnight hospital stays and prescription costs. Although you will certainly hope you won't have to use your insurance, it will pay for itself ten-fold if you do end up having to use it. Pickpockets and Street Crime We tend to think that since we are on vacation and on top of the world that nothing can touch us. But unfortunately, crime doesn't know, or care, that you are on vacation. In fact, foreigners, depending on the country, are often targets of organized criminals. This can take the shape of pickpockets who are quite commonly found in big cities. Although you can never be completely protected, it is important to not keep all of your valuable information on you. If you have three credit cards, then leave two of them at the hotel when you leave. And if you use a purse, always make sure it is right with you. And never leave your wallet unattended. This might seem like common sense, but many people forget these simple tips when travelling abroad. Men might wish to keep their wallets in an inside jacket pocket instead of their back pants pocket. This makes it much more difficult to be targeted by a professional thief. Make Sure All Your Papers are in Order You want your vacation to be as seamless as possible. That means having all of your necessary documents updated and ready before your trip. There is nothing worse than an unexpected delay at the airport and missing your flight just because you didn't renew your passport. These small check-points can make your trip as stress-free as possible. Also, make sure to have at least two different credit cards with you on your trip. You never know when one might go missing, or be stolen, so you need to have a backup plan. Also, carry your credit card provider's information with you, in case it does get lost and you need to cancel it.
