Upon first glance, the idea of visiting family in a tropical paradise appears to have the makings of the perfect budget-friendly getaway: free lodging, free tour guides, and free food. Even if one didn't care for his family all that much, the infinite access to the beach at almost no charge is seemingly a more than adequate trade-off.

However, it would be wise to note that the "almost at no charge" part rarely holds true; everything will costs you more than you anticipate and often times money will be the least of it. So, in the end, that dirt-cheap Caribbean retreat may not be so dirt-cheap after all, and here's why:

1. YOUR RELATIVES WILL WANT GIFTS

This is particularly true for those of us who have family in developing or undeveloped countries where access to basic U.S. amenities can be scant and/or expensive. If such goods were the only items requested then it wouldn't be a very costly endeavor for the traveler, but as we all know, people's desires tend to extend beyond the bare minimum. Expect to be asked for everything from electronics to the latest fashions, and even if it's something that they already have in spades, they will ask for three more.

2. IT'S YOUR VACATION, NOT YOUR RELATIVES'

To some extent, we all feel that our relatives will roll out the red carpet and chauffer us around their country with the utmost enthusiasm. After all, what could be more important than ensuring that we come away from their country with a knowledge of its many splendors? For starters, work, kids, and the overall dealings of everyday life.

While they may live in paradise, the truth is that they are working stiffs just like the rest of us, and after a hard day at the office, kicking back and spending time with their immediate family is a far more appealing option than playing tour guide. This means that you will often have to look outside of your family for transportation and guidance, which, as you guessed, will costs money.

3. YOU WILL PAY FOR YOUR STAY WITH LABOR

Like it or not, you're going to be spending a lot of time around you relatives' house, and if you think that being a guest protects you from household duties, think again. There's always a child that needs watching, dishes that need washing, or a dead chicken that needs to be pulled from under the shed.

Furthermore, almost unfailingly, something will be broken within the house that your handy man uncle will not be able to repair on his own. Vacation packages usually don't include heavy lifting and calloused hands, but in these cases such perks are all inclusive.

With so many expenses staring you right in the face, shacking up with your relatives in the tropics may not seem like such a bargain, but it is. Barring extreme cases, it's cheaper than a hotel and you will be awarded the experience of seeing the country from a local's perspective. Not to mention, it's great merely getting to spend time with loved ones who you seldom get to visit.

Your relatives may be more demanding and less able to oblige to your wants than you would like, but remember that you will act in the same fashion when they come to visit you, and make no mistake, they will come to visit. As I stated before, nothing is free, and if by some miracle you manage to get away without shelling out much money or effort, you will pay for your vacation in full when it is your turn to be the host.
