Although it is true there is much hostility of the ignorance of Americans through out Europe, it is not found too frequently in Europe. Here is a list of things to avoid during your stay in Barcelona.

1. Chanting.
The most obvious, avoid chanting ´Go USA!´ through out the streets of Barcelona. Just like anywhere else, people will think you look stupid and trust me; people do chant this throughout the streets any given night.

2. Dress up.
You´re in Europe, put an outfit together! No one will be able to tell if your jeans are from Barcelona, London or New York. Everyone in Europe appreciates nice fashion so put an outfit together, do not just throw on a sweatshirt, jeans, gym shoes and a hat. Yes, you can wear jeans but wear them with a nice sweater and a nice pair of shoes. Men need to be in black dress shoes and a dress shirt to enter the clubs at night.

3. Speak quietly.
While riding the metro, respect others around you and do not yell to your friends across the metro. Most people ride the metro quietly and patiently.

4. Avoid excessive map usage.
Try to plan your day before you are on the streets. Write down directions on a piece of paper rather than carry a map around to look for ways to go. It is smart to have a map in your purse but to avoid stereotypes and potential pick pocketing you should write out directions and not stand on the corner with a map out.

5. The Ugly American.
Try to avoid being the Ugly American, act with caution and walk with poise. These will help you to fit in with the culture, not look like a soar thumb and avoid potential pick pockets.
