Visiting the Controversial Devil's Island, French GuianaBY: Maya Ballesteros | Category: SOUTH AMERICA | Submitted: 2010-06-24 09:51:22
Devil's Island, French Guiana, whether you plan a business or vacation trip, is a nice island, the smallest one from those three islands of Iles du Salut, translated as Safety Islands. It is placed at about 11 km from the French Guiana coast and it is still under the negative influence of being a notorious penal colony, until 1952. It was one of the renowned prisons in human history. These days we can read autobiographies or books, watch movies and stage plays, and all of them are going to tell us a controversial, intriguing story, hard to be believed. It is known to be a place where people suffer while many horrors occurred and, this is the reason why, many people are skeptical in having a vacation on this island. If you are not one of those people and you are not impressed by all those facts, you can still enjoy a full holiday, or, at least, a whole day trip. The nearby locations provide ferry or boats trips to take you to and from the Devil's Island. Many travel agents can arrange for you sail dates and boat trips to your convenience. If you are not that confident in having a full vacation, you can also try a cruise starting, let us say, from Dubai with stops in Bombay, Cochin, Port Louis, Durban, Jamestown, Rio de Janeiro, Devil's Island, Fort Lauderdale, with a cruise company, as Regent Seven Seas. Alternatively, you can also enjoy a cruise, starting on the other side of the world, from Miami and reaching the Devil's Island by cruising on the Atlantic Ocean. Whatever you choose, going for a cruise is the easiest way to create your own idea about the island and return whenever you wish. Anyway, once you see the island you realize that it is a small, silent paradise, great for a relaxing vacation. Devil's Island has a tropical climate that remains consistently hot and humid, with a raining season from December until June. It features a rocky landscape with many palm trees on the Atlantic coast, and many dense jungle sites; it is wide opened to the Caribbean Sea. This marvelous island invites you to visit its nature, its historical prison cells and the old prisoner barracks. More, there are some paths crossing the entire island with many signs providing useful information about places you can visit. As well, other wonderful places for you to visit are its beaches, with fine sand and clear waters. In order to stay safe, due to the big shark families feeding around its shores, swimming and any water sports are forbidden, as, over the time, there were recorded few violent shark attacks. You can reach this island by ferry or helicopter, but always check for availability, as, even though there are many tours, there also are many tourists, especially during summer. If you visit the island while cruising, the transportation to the shore is done using small boats. Once arrived on the island you are going to be amazed of the solitude and quietness of this location, welcoming you with calm, relaxing atmosphere. It is true that this is a difficult place to visit, as it touches your sensibility, especially knowing that so many people died over there. As a profound person, you just cannot stop on thinking about all those innocents condemned to live and suffer for years, and maybe this should be the reason why you have to visit the Devil's Island: to bring a well-deserved tribute to all those people, for their pain and despair in such an enchanting location.
