If you want to holiday, but really don't want to leave a massive carbon footprint behind then try a holiday in an eco house. These days a holiday in an eco house doesn't have to mean that you lose the little luxuries of life that you might so look forward to on holiday. Gone are the days when a stay in an eco house meant dank rooms and cold evenings. These days you can find the most decadent eco houses which provide you with all the mod cons, yet still give us an education and a lesson to us all in being green.

There is more to a stay in an eco house than putting out the recycling every week and not having too many baths. The sort of places being developed nowadays where you can holiday in an eco house have been designed and built from scratch with the environment in mind. For example, in France you can holiday in an eco house called an Earthship, which is a totally self sustainable building, yet at the same time a fully furnished and fully functioning three bedroom gite, with all the mod cons. Earthships such as this are houses which cool and heat themselves completely naturally via thermal / solar dynamics. They collect power from the wind and the sun; they harvest water from snow and rain and they treat their own sewage.

A stay in an eco house like these means literally zero carbon emissions! Another holiday in an eco house could be a stay in a straw built house or cabin. A natural building in a rural setting - renewable energy, wide and super insulated walls to retain the warmth and a whole host of other eco features. Often people who market a stay in an eco house are extremely conscious of the environment themselves. Other quirky places you can stay in an eco house include roundhouses - the facilities in roundhouses certainly do tend to be quite basic, so you have to be prepared for this particular type of holiday in an eco house. However, they are fascinating places to stay; always handmade, and often built from earth, logs and bottles, they tend to have turf rooves and despite the facilities being basic, they are the ultimate romantic escape.

More mainstream for a holiday in an eco house are the places which were once little cottages and houses, and have simply been adapted and renovated to accommodate modern eco-friendly principles. That might mean a wind turbine in the garden to provide all the electricity, solar panels and wood burning stoves. It's also important to find out where all the materials and products used have come from when you have your stay in an eco house - locally sourced products and using local craftsmen all goes towards improving the eco impact of any given property. All that to say, you can holiday in an eco house in comfort - whether it's basic comfort or with some added luxuries. You can enjoy a holiday that's a little bit different from the norm, you can feel good about the fact that you haven't been trashing the environment for your own benefit, and you can spread the word amongst friends and family so that little by little, people will learn!
