The Famous Brancusi and the Almost Unknown Targu-jiuBY: Travel Splendid | Category: OTHERS | Submitted: 2010-08-21 01:34:01
The Gorj county's residence, Targu-Jiu city, is located on the same parallel with Torino, in Italy, Bordeaux, in France, and Minneapolis, in the United States of America. It is situated in the Getic Sub-Carpathians geographic area, in the Targu-Jiu - Campu Mare Depression, one of the largest interhill Carpathian depression. It's divided by Romania's capital, Bucharest, by 306 km, and the safest routes to get here, are Bucharest - Pitesti - Craiova - Targu-Jiu, and Bucharest - Pitesti - Ramnicu Valcea - Targu-Jiu. The city is named after the Jiu River, which is crossing it, and which, over time, formed three terraces, being the administrative area of the town. Precincts of a Dacian village, before Dacia was conquered by the Romans, its territory was coverd once, by large wild forests, thereby, offering a good shelter to the villagers, protecting them by the enemy's attacks. Here, major arteries were intersecting, making the connection between the Danube, Transilvania, and Banat. The Gorj area is filled with picturesque places, wooden mountains, rocky slopes, caves and wonderful natural monuments, such as: the speleological reserve from Closani, the Jiu step, Cheile Oltetului, Cheile Sohodolului, the Women's Cave, the Polovragi Cave. Gorj county hosts over 25 foot mountain tourist trails, and, among them, two long journey european tourists routes, (E3 and E7), three climbing areas (Cheile Sohodolului - Runcu, Cheile Galbenului - Baia de Fier, Cheile Oltetului - Polovragi), five speleological areas, forming the greatest speleological potential in Romania, a ski resort (Ranca), as well as fishing and hunting areas, which attract large numbers of tourists, each year. Also, we can't forget the historical and architectural monuments, scattered throughout the region, the main reason, why this area of the country transformed into a real museum. Their inventory is limited to: 34 archaelogical sites and monuments; 298 architectural assemblies and monuments; 5 memorial buildings; 39 monuments and art ensembles of memorial value; 7 historical urban, and rural areas. The sculptural ensemble, Constantin Brancusi, from Targu-Jiu, or the Heroes Avenue, is a tribute to the fallen heroes, during the WWI, a monument designed and built by Constantin Brancusi. The three sculptural components - Table of Silence, Kiss Gate and Infinite Column - are arranged on the same axis, with a sunset to sunrise orientation, with 1.275 meters in length. Table of Silence, worked in limestone, represents the dinner before the battle. Around the Table of Silence, Brancusi placed 12 symbolic chairs, at an equal distance apart. The name of „chair" conceals, actually, a sacred reality: the hourglasses, one for each solar symbol, measures the passage of time. Everything in silence. Kiss Gate, built of travertine, represents the gate to another life. The kiss motif, present on the gate's pillars, could also mean the eyes watching inward. Infinite Column, known also, erroneously, as the „The Infinity Column", considered by specialists, the peak of modern art, represents a true „spiritual testament" of the artist, a real axis mundi, meant to support, eternally, the vault of heaven. This architectural monument, of 29,33 meters in height, is formed by 17 rhomboidal cast iron modules. From an ethnological point of view, the monuments from Targu-Jiu are cosmic representations of the human life, begining with the birth, symbolized by the Table of Silence, and ending with the passage to nonexistence, symbolized by the Infinite Column (a funeral poles styling, present in the southeastern part of Romania). The distance between them, representing the human lifetime, is interrupted by the Kiss Gate, symbolizing marriage and the start of a new cycle of life. From the table of destiny, placed by Brancusi, on the river's shore, the time given to human life, which never returns (folklore), flows from east to west, marked by different crests, and, afterwards, from Earth to Heaven, the eternal time being represented by the Endless Column's cyclic rhombus, this ethnological analysis was proposed by Ion Ghinoiu. Constantin Brancusi is the romanian sculptor who brought overwhelming contributions to the renewal of vision and language arts, in contemporary sculpture. He released the sculpture of mainly mechanical imitation of nature, refused a figurative representation of reality, predicted the expression of the things' essence, the shape's vitality, he created, through his work, the sensitive and spiritual unity. Brancusi reflected the way of thinking of the romanian peasant. Through its peasant origins, Brancusi found his deep roots of the work, in traditions, myths, and the magical function of romanian folk art. Brancusi revealed to the western world, the sacred dimension of reality. A central figure in the modern art movement, Constantin Brancusi is considered one of the greatest sculptors of the 20th century. His sculptures stand out through shape elegance and the sensitive usage of materials, combining simplicity of romanian folk art with the refinement of parisian avantgarde. The verticality, horizontality, weight, density, as well as the importance to light and space, are traits of Brancusi's creations. His work has strongly influenced the modern concept of form, in sculpture, painting and drawing. „Are imbeciles the ones saying that my works would be abstract; what they call abstract, is the purest realism, because reality is not represented by its exterior shape, but, by the idea within it, by the essence of things".
