If the 2012 Prophecy is Real...5 Places You Have to Visit Before the End!BY: Rufus Elliott | Category: OTHERS | Submitted: 2011-11-28 07:29:46
If the Mayans are right then the world will end on the 21st December 2012. That gives you just over a year to visit everywhere you've always wanted to go. If you're having trouble deciding what and where, I've picked 5 places that are totally unmissable! 1. The Pyramids and Sphinx at the Giza Plateau Generally considered as having been built between 2500 and 5000 years ago, the pyramids and sphinx are the last remaining wonders of the ancient world. Archaeologists, historians and Egyptologists to this day remain divided about their origins and how they were built. Perhaps the 2 most enduring mysteries concern the use of the pyramids and the disfigurement on the sphinx's face. Many believe the pyramids were built as burial chambers for dead pharaohs; the only problem is that in over 138 discovered pyramids there has never been a pharaoh found. While the sphinx's disfigurement is believed to have been from chemical weathering; again the only problem with that is the last time the climate of the Giza plateau was considered to be wet enough to achieve this was over 5000 years ago. Most historians would date the Sphinx as around 4500 years old... 2. The Himalayas Separating the Indian subcontinent form the Tibetan plateau, the Himalayas are the greatest, highest and most famous mountain ranges in the world and home to the 2 highest mountains in the world; Everest and K2. To put this in perspective the highest mountain range outside of Asia is still below 7,000 feet. In the Himalayas there are over 100 mountains above 7000 feet with some above 8000feet! If the world is to become consumed by giant tidal waves this is probably the place to be when it happens. 3. The Great Wall of China Built to defend China from its enemies, this wall is so big and so long you can actually see it from space! The ambition and engineering nous to complete this project is beyond staggering. It stretches as far as the eye can see and there are parts of it that were built over 2000 years ago. The combined size of the structure is almost 9000 kilometres making it the largest man-made structure on earth and possibly the greatest engineering project in history at least from a defence perspective. 4. Machu Pichu Rediscovered in 1911, the city of Machu Pichu is located almost 8000feet above sea level and is carved into the mountain ridge above the Urubamba Valley in Peru. If the significance of that hasn't struck you between 500 and 1000 years ago the Inca's carved into the top of a mountain a city and in the process transported rocks weighing hundreds of tons up a mountain. This like the pyramids and sphinx is engineering on an absurd level without modern technology. We would struggle to do this today if we didn't have machines to help us. 5. Hawaii and its active volcanoes. Ever wondered how it all began? Well at Hawaii you can see some of the world's most active volcanoes spewing molten lava straight into the sea. This is how the world we know was formed millions of years ago and how the world continues to be formed; an awe-inspiring sight and only possible in locations of active volcanoes. Take the opportunity to come full circle. Happy with my suggestions? If you think I have missed anything please let me know!
