The country of New Zealand is not one large land mass, it's actually a collection of more than 30 islands. The largest of these - North and South Islands - are home to more than 98% of the population, and are the major tourist draws with the largest cities - Auckland and Christchurch. If you're planning a trip to New Zealand, which island should you visit? Most Kiwis would recommend you visit both islands if time permits, because they're quite different.

Of the two, South Island is the largest, encompassing over half of New Zealand's total land mass. While it's larger, it is actually less densely populated, so there's more of the great outdoors to explore. Among the highlights are the mountain ranges - also known as the Southern Alps - which run the entire length of the mountain. Hiking here offers breath-taking views of the countryside and surrounding sea.

The largest city on the South Island is Christchurch. Established in 1856, it's also New Zealand's oldest. Its nickname is The Garden City, owing to its many public parks and beautiful residential gardens. The 75-acre Christchurch Botanic Gardens offers a golf course, fields for cricket, rugby and netball, and also a stadium for open-air concerts.

North Island is famous for its beautiful beaches and Maori culture. You'll find hot pools and areas of geothermal activity here, along with two of the biggest man-made structures in New Zealand: the Auckland Harbour Bridge and Sky Tower, which offers visitors sweeping views up to 80 km in every direction. The North Island is also where you'll find the Bay of Islands, one of the main attractions tourists flock to see.

Auckland is New Zealand's most heavily populated urban area, and is unique because it has a harbour on two independent bodies of water - the Tasman Sea and the Hauraki Gulf. This city offers visitors a wide variety of activities, including shopping, cultural activities, and day trips to tour local wineries.

How to hop between islands? The increased airline competition in this region has resulted in many cheap flights running between Auckland and either Christchurch or Queenstown. Another option is to take a ferry between Wellington and Picton. While the 90-km voyage across the Cook Strait takes around three hours, it has a reputation for being among the most beautiful ferry rides on the planet.
