With New Zealand being the last land mass discovered, just a little over a thousand years ago, there are not that many people. There are however a vast and diverse landscape, from dense jungle forests, tall snow covered peaks, and some of the most rugged shorelines. These are all located on just one small island within New Zealand's islands, compared to larger land mass islands like nearby Australia. Because of this, it attracts people of all interests and lifestyles.

Because of it's wide diversity, many movies have been filmed here, including the Lord of The Rings Trilogy. In fact, while much of the set have been dismantled, Hobbiton can still be found. It is just two hours South of Auckland, on the state highway 27. However, because it in on a private farm, the only way you have access to it is by a guided tour. There are also many different Lord Of The Rings Tours available, including an eight hour walking tour of the Tongariro Crossing, otherwise known as Mount Doom. This is said to be the best day walk tour, even if it is a bit challenging.

Because of the many different areas, really any time of the year is good for visiting New Zealand. It all depends on your travel plans, and what kinds of activities you are interested in. There are some things you should note however. One of them is that because this enchanted land is South of the Equator, seasons are the opposite of people living in the Northern Hemisphere. This means that December through February are the warmest, and the maximum daytime temperatures during the Summer range from 15-30 degrees Celsius. You also have to remember that temperatures are measured in Celsius, instead of the standard Fahrenheit. During the Winter months, from June to August, you can expect 5-18C. A lot has to do with what you are planning to see and do.

It is also important to understand that because mild year round temperatures, the climate is always changing. Even in the warmer Summer months you can expect to find many cooler and rainy days, but Winters can often have many sunny and warm periods. In general, the South Island is a little drier in the Winter than the North island. Marlborough, Bay of Plenty, Nelson, and Hawkes Bay tend to have the best sunshine, with the west coast of New Zealand, and Fiordland tend to have the most rainfall.

Also it really depends on how you are going to see this spectacular country. Just like anywhere else in the world, everything tends to be a little more expensive during the peak Summer tourist season, so if you are considering renting a motor home, or caravan, then you may find better rates the further towards the off season. This is also the time when rental companies are offering special rates and discounts to help promote business.

No matter what time of the year you decide to go, you should always pack to be prepared. Bring a water proof over coat, dress in thin but warmer layers, and be ready to adjust what your wearing accordingly.
