New Zealand, a country located in the southwestern Pacific Ocean, is distinguished b y its geographic remoteness and whose nearest neighbors are Fiji and Tonga. The population is composed mainly of peoples of European descent and the aboriginal Maori, the minority. Despite the remoteness of this country, the citizens have a reason to smile as Aotearoa offers its eccentric scenery, splendid festivals, wine and food. Aside from these, New Zealand also boasts enchanting outdoor encounters. Tagged as Middle Earth, New Zealand shows off the wonderful locations used by big films such as the "Lord of the Rings Trilogy", "The Chronicles of Narnia: The Lion, The Witch and The Wardrobe", "The Last Samurai" and in the future, the sequel of "Avatar". Let's travel down the road to Narnia and Middle Earth. Woodhill Forest: The Camp of the White Witch The murky trees in Woodhill forest, an hour's drive northwest of Auckland, underwent transformation and became the feared encampment of the White Witch in Narnia. It is located at Rimmer Road on State Highway 16 just before Helensville. Aside from being the witch's camp, it has a system of trails for mountain bikes. Flock Hill: Where the Great Battle was fought In the South Island, high above its Southern Alps is the great Flock Hill. An area littered with tortuous rocks and spectacular valleys. It was in this area where the background of the great battle was fought. Cave Stream Scenic River near Broken River has karst topography (limestone) that represents the classic landscape in Narnia. This area is 90 minutes away from Christchurch at the Arthur's Pass highway going to Greymouth. Elephant Rocks: The Camp Of Aslan Located at the Waitaki region of South Island, Elephant Rocks became the camp of Aslan. Purakaunui Bay: The great castle of Cair Paravel The great castle of Cair Paravel was fashioned through computer-generated images overlaid on the rock face of Purakaunui Bay, Catlins. It is a region of stunning coastal landscape. Auckland, Matamata: The Shire This is the dwelling of the Hobbits. Stroll through the grassy hillside of the Shire Rotorua, Taupo: Mordor Here the Lake Taupo is appreciated as Mordor, the realm of shadows. It is a crater lake recognized as the world's loudest volcanic eruption. Franz Josef and Fox Glacier, Wanaka: The Misty Mountains Lake Wanaka and look in the direction of the Alps at this angle and make out the scenery where Jandal took off with Gwaihir after the rescue of Isengard. Queenstown, Te Anau: The Middle Earth Te Anau is the doorway to the Fiordland National Park. Pause by Lake Te Anau and let in the mountains and sky to appreciate why this area was selected to symbolize Middle Earth. Te Anau, Central Otago: The Edoras This is the heart of South Island and where Edoras, the center of Rohan was shot. Aside from these two popular movies, the "Last Samurai" was also filmed at the hills of the Uruti Valley, adjusted a little to emulate the rural life of Japan around 1860's. Mount Taranaki stunningly portrayed Mount Fujiyama. Furthermore, the sequel to "Avatar" and the movie "The Hobbit" will also be filmed in this stunning and magical country. This is another boost to the film industry of New Zealand.
