Abhaneri - A fascinating rustic village in RajasthanBY: anushree sah | Category: India | Submitted: 2011-09-12 11:44:45
If you are out to explore Rajasthan or visiting Jaipur or if you are fascinated towards old buildings, great architecture, want to click good pictures or just want to go back in time, then Abhaneri is the place to visit. It was a Saturday, 10 in the morning, when I got a call from my friend.....always wanting to explore places, she had read about these step wells close to Jaipur. Description sounded promising and we (three of us) hit it to Abhaneri in her I10 car. A distance of about 95 kms from Jaipur on Agra Jaipur road. Highway was a smooth drive, with greenery around and quite a few Dhabas all through the way. We stopped at one Shree Dhaba with umbrellas covered with creepers for Tea and snacks, clicked photos of the ever colourful turban clad native and camels...in just 1 and a half hours we were at Abhaneri. True to its description- a small rustic village with extremely simple mud dwellings, children playing and waving at you- was indeed a warm welcome!! As you enter the village, there is a temple and at about 50 m are the Step wells. To start with, Abhaneri is home to one of India's largest Step wells or Baori. Built during the reigns of Chand rulers, the Baori not only served as a pool for ritual cleansing before visiting the temple and water supply during dry weather, but also as a resting place- for leisure and other activities during summers. The baori is surrounded by statues of Gods and Goddesses, with domination of different styles of Lord Shiva. Stairs leading to the well are systematically designed. The back side of the Well has covered resting places with thick stone walls serving as cool haven in summers for the natives and travelers .... pity it only smells of urine now. Close to the Well is the Harshat Mata Temple, built around 7 AD, also during the reign of Chand Rulers." The temple walls and pillars are all covered with similar figures of gods and goddesses. The temple offers a delightful view of brown and green patched fields dotted with huts and trees. The Air, the picturesque view with the temple and baori just make you feel a part of that era... After spending about 3 hrs, we realized it was time to go back....We stopped on the way back to fill our empty stomachs and by 7 in the evening we were back in Jaipur... A short, enjoyable and enriching trip..A perfect weekend getaway!!!
