Most visitors who have travelled in France will be familiar with the Dordogne region, well known for its many castles and villages and beautiful setting in a rolling forested landscape.

What visitors don't usually realise that a short way to the south, on the border between the Dordogne and Lot-et-Garonne departments, is a quiet river that also passes through and near many picturesque and historical villages and provides an interesting alternative.

The Valley of the River Dropt travels from the incredibly well preserved medieval bastide town of Monpazier and then heads westwards towards Bordeaux. Along the way the river will introduce numerous fascinating monuments to the intrepid explorer.

Among the highlights be sure to visit Villereal to see the rare 13th century market hall that dominates the centre of the town and Eymet, another well preserved 13th century town on the banks of the Dropt river. It is also worth taking a short excursion to the north to discover the narrow alleys and medieval houses in Issigeac.

Continuing westwards, stop at the church in Allemans-du-Dropt to see some of the finest 15th century frescoes in south-west France, then perhaps to Duras where you can sample some of their world famous wines - you are now entering the renowned Bordeaux wine region of France.

Several other towns and villages deserve a visit - in particular we should mention the large open central square in Monsegur, lined with cafes and shops, and the impressive town of La Reole. La Reole is close to the point where the Dropt river meets the larger Garonne river and has a wealth of important monuments to enjoy: a castle, a priory and a 12th century town hall built by Richard the Lionheart (the oldest in France) among them, along with a bustling town centre crammed with half-timbered streets.

There are many more places and monuments not mentioned here that you can discover for yourself when you visit this quiet part of France.
