Things to do in Punta CanaBY: FREDERICK JONES | Category: Caribbean | Submitted: 2010-08-04 17:13:59
Since the 1970's, Punta Cana has been one of the most visited vacation destinations in the Dominican Republic. It is located on the eastern tip of the island and is the setting for stunning beaches offering unique swimming and snorkeling experiences. The white sandy beaches span about 20 miles and with palm trees in the background, it is truly a tropical paradise. In spite of its name, Punta Cana is not a real town. Rather it is the name given to the collection of hotels and resorts that have been built up along the stretch of beach. The weather of Punta Cana is fairly consistent all year, but the island does lie within the Hurricane Belt. The best time of the year to visit this location is between January and April when temperatures are at their highest and there are few if any rainy days. History of Punta Cana The Punta Cana region came into its own as a tourist destination in the 1970's when Europeans and Americans started traveling here to escape the cold northern climate. The first resort was built here in 1969 by Frank R. Rainieri, a Dominican businessman and Theodora W. Kheel, a New York attorney. The two formed a partnership to build a resort community that would showcase the beauty of the Dominican Republic to the world. Today, this area is one of the most popular vacation destinations in the Caribbean. Activities of Punta Cana The hotels and resorts provide a wealth of activities for their guests. If you want to explore the region on horseback to get off the beaten path, the staff at the hotel will likely be able to make the arrangements for such an adventure for you with Rancho RN-23. Each trip will guide you through groves of coconut palms, along the sandy beaches and through the wild and untamed terrain of the countryside. Golf enthusiasts can tee off at the course of the Barcelo Bivaro Beach, Golf and Casino Resort, which is the best golf course on the eastern part of the island. The casino is hopping all day and night and offers a fantastic opportunity to hit the jackpot. Nightlife bustles in Punta Cana with entertainment offered by the hotels. The Bivaro Disco is renowned as being the hotspot for tourists with a slightly European flavor. It didn't take long for word to get out about the peace and tranquility of the area where you can get away from it all. Children will surely savor the experience of swimming with the dolphins at Dolphin Explorer, which is also a wildlife park featuring the animals native to the island as well as from other parts of the Caribbean and the world. Encounter sharks and rays in the water or get up close and personal with the sea lions. The Marinarium is the ultimate in an underwater experience for children and adults. At this location, you can truly explore the wonders that lie beneath the surface of the ocean. Where to stay in Punta Cana Punta Cana offers a variety of accommodations for all visitors. The huge complex of the Barcelo Bavaro Beach, Golf and Casino Resort consists of five separate hotels, all of which are located within the confines of a parklike setting. There are 15 restaurants to choose from and the whole network of accommodations and dining venues is accessible by minivans. There are 18 bars on the premises, 5 outdoor pools, and 3 discos in addition to a huge casino and challenging golf course. The whirlpool tubs can accommodate up to 30 people at one time. Babysitting and children's programs are available to parents who want some free time for themselves. The Bavaro Princess is another hotel that opens up onto a private beach that stretches for almost two miles. The accommodations consist of bungalows that contain kitchenettes and small bathrooms in addition to bedrooms. Dining Venues in Punta Cana The resorts offer such numerous restaurants that many visitors rarely wander very far way to experience the traditional cuisine of the island. If you want to enjoy some of the best seafood dishes, then you should visit Captain Cook where whatever you order is fresh and grilled to perfection. At most of the larger restaurants of the resorts, such as the Restaurant Palace of the Bavaro chain, you will have to make dinner reservations.
