Yangshuo, China: a traveller's dream come true

By: Robert - Article Submitted on: 2008-04-28

Introduction to Yangshuo:
Yangshuo is located about 70km south of Guilin in Guangxi Province, China. It is famous for being at the centre of an area of outstanding natural beauty. It is surrounded by limestone peaks and gorgeous countryside.

Getting to Yangshuo:
Guilin is served by an airport as well as bus and train stations. There are regular buses from Guilin to Yangshuo throughout the day. Many choose to take the Li River Cruise from Guilin to Yangshuo instead so as to see the beautiful scenery in between in style.

Accommodation:
Yangshuo has a wide range of accommodation options from cheap dormitories through to a 5 star resort. There is no need to book ahead except over domestic holiday periods. If you are arriving by bus you need to be wary of touts.

Things to see and do
  • Li River: The Li River flows from Guilin down to Yangshuo and beyond. There are many boating options to/from Yangshuo. Any of these will let you enjoy the scenery and get closer to life along the river banks. Expect to see lots of fishermen, women washing and wildlife: ducks, water buffalo and lots of enormous bamboo.
  • Yulong River: This tributary of the Li River has become famous for its bamboo rafting. There are several venues where you can be poled downriver by a local farmer. This option combines well with a bike ride.
  • Moon Hill: Still the most famous peak in the area, Moon Hill offers a moderate climb up and through the moon-shaped hole to a viewing platform that lets you see for miles around.
  • Bike Rides: Simply the best option to get you out into the countryside. Hire a bike from one of the many operators and head off wherever you like. Do not worry about getting lost. It is always easy to find your way home again. You may just want a local guide along to help you understand what you are seeing.
  • Cooking lessons: Whether you like cooking at home or not, learning to cook some special Chinese dishes can be great fun. Go with a group or join in as individuals. Classes daily, taking you up to lunch or dinner. Yes - you get to eat your own creations.
  • Bars and restaurants: Yangshuo has been a backpackers haven for years and offers a wide choice of western and Chinese food. The bars come to life later and offer you a chance to meet with other travellers.
  • Martial Arts: Many visitors choose to learn something of the local culture. Taking a lesson in tai'chi is popular for all ages. It is also possible to learn Kung Fu. If your interest is more passive then check out the Kung Fu Show which includes a Dragon Dance and a Lion Dance as well as several martial art demonstrations.
