Walking in Crete and hike in mountains of Lassithi Plateau, Greece

By: Holidays2Crete - Article Submitted on: 2008-09-21

Hiking and walking is one of the best ways to enjoy the beauty of Crete and its countryside. We have provided a guide for all those budding walkers who want to explore the mountains and valleys of this wonderfully picturesque country.

As always when hiking its recommended that you always walk in groups of 2 or more, also carry enough water for your journey. The weather in Crete during the summer months is very hot and the area arid and dry. Always study the maps for the correct distances before you set off.

You can hike through the pleasant country and mountains of Lassithi Plateau, there are routes that start in Ierapetra and run through quite a few interesting old derelict villages.

Some villages have long been abandoned in favour of the tourist trade profits that the locals can now earn in the coastline resorts.

Some villages are still going strong and offer small tavernas and cafes that you can stop and rest your weary feet in and chat with the locals (beware though you must have a good grasp of Greek for this.)

Its important when you choose to walk in Crete that you choose a perfect location that offers easy access to the walking routes. A lot of people opt for resorts like Agios Nikolaos, Ierapetra, Stalis for Mohos and Lassithi Plateau and Heraklion for lower easier walks.
