Things to Do in Australia - Victoria

By: Trisha Garbrick - Article Submitted on: 2008-08-07

Victoria is located at the south eastern most corner of Australia and is the country’s second smallest state, and the most densely populated. Although it may be small, it is home to more than 30 national parks, an abundance of wildlife, including kangaroos and koala, hundreds of miles of coastline, and over 350 wineries.

Melbourne is the capitol of Victoria. It is an elegant and stylish city situated around the shores of Port Phillip Bay, and on the banks of the Yarra River. Well known for its rich arts community, shopping, dining and glamorous festivals, travelers who enjoy a cosmopolitan city want to make Melbourne a stop on their itinerary.

During your visit to Melbourne, be sure not to miss:

• The Queen Victoria Market is the oldest and largest open air market in the Southern Hemisphere. Here you can find anything from fresh produce and gourmet food items, to clothing and souvenirs.

National Gallery of Victoria is the oldest and largest gallery and museum in Australia. It holds more than 70,000 items between its 2 buildings, which are just a short walking distance apart. One building houses international art, the other houses Australian art. Both buildings are open year round, except for major holidays. And admission is free!

Royal Botanical Gardens are some of the most beautifully landscaped gardens in the world. Within walking distance from the city center, these world famous gardens boast more than 20 different types of gardens, including an interactive children’s garden and the Aboriginal Heritage Walk. Entry is free!

Federation Square is considered the city’s “hub”. This cultural precinct connects the city center with the Yarra River. It is comprised of art galleries, a museum, shops, restaurants, bars and a cinema.

• Some other noteworthy attractions in Melbourne include St. Patrick’s Cathedral, the Melbourne Aquarium,Melbourne Zoo, and the Victorian Arts Centre.

Take a drive down the Great Ocean Road for an experience you will never forget. One of the world’s most scenic coastline drives begins at the town of Torquay and winds 273 km to the town of Warnambool. This picturesque road goes through the Surf Coast, Shipwreck Coast, beautiful Apollo Bay and Port Campbell National Park.

Just off shore from the Port Campbell National Park, the world famous Twelve Apostles can be found. These limestone formations are some of the most famous rocks in the world. This site was originally called Sow and Piglets, but was changed to “The Twelve Apostles” in the 1950’s, even though only nine remained, to lure more visitors to the area. Since then, another Apostle has collapsed, leaving only eight.

There are many viewing platforms along the Great Ocean Road and near the Twelve Apostles with easy access and tons of amazing views. If you would like to spend the night, there are several lodging options along the way in the towns of Anglesea, Lorne and Port Campbell.

Phillip Island, just 90 minutes from Melbourne, offers swimming beaches, surfing beaches, fishing and the opportunity to see wildlife in their natural habitat.

Phillip Island Nature Park is home to the world famous Penguin Parade. Here you can watch the penguins make their way from the sea back to their burrows every evening. The Koala Conservation Center can be found in the Phillip Island Nature Park where you will come face to face with Koalas in their natural habitat and can enjoy a tree top boardwalk stroll for an up close look of the Koalas life.

Just about an hour outside of Melbourne is the beautiful Yarra Valley and Dandendong Ranges. This area makes for a great day trip or even longer excursions. The area is most well known for the breathtaking scenery and over 60 world class wineries. Some of the other highlights in this region are:

Healesville Sanctuary. One of the top attractions in the area this zoo is set in natural bushland and specializes in caring for native Australian animals.

National Rhododendron Gardens is home of more than 15,000 rhododendrons, 12,000 azaleas, 250,000 daffodils, many native birds and beautiful views of the Yarra Valley.

Victoria is an excellent place for wine connoisseurs to explore the many wine regions and hundreds of vineyards spread throughout the region. Some of the most distinctive regions include The Yarra Valley, Mornington Peninsula, the Grampians and The Pyrenees. There are several day tours available year round or you can visit individual wineries on your own as most offer daily tours.
