Take a Boat Trip on the Li River from Yangshuo, China

By: Robert - Article Submitted on: 2008-05-19

Yangshuo is famous for being at the very heart of some gorgeous scenery. There are many options to get out and see the surrounding countryside. One of the favourites is a boat trip on the Li River. Viewed from the water, the distinctive mountain peaks are particularly attractive. The best times to take a boat trip are early morning or late evening, with the sun low, but whatever the lighting you can sure of some memorable views.

Life around the water's edge adds more interest. You will see plenty of ducks and water buffalo and an increasing number of wild birds. Local kingfishers are a stunning azure blue. You will also see lots of pretty butterflies and dragonflies. The locals at work add another dimension. Women doing their laundry, fishermen on bamboo rafts and farmers at work in the fields are all classic images for this part of rural China.

Boat trips on the Li River are available in different lengths. For a short trip, take a powered bamboo raft out of Yangshuo for 30 minutes or so.The longest boat trip available is the full official Li River cruise. This route takes you from the docks south of Guilin all the way to Yangshuo in 3-5 hours depending on the water level. The best option for many will be a privately arranged boat trip. This gives you
considerably more flexibility as well a more tranquil experience. The powered bamboo rafts can do trips of up to about an hour's duration. However, for a longer trip, with shelter, medium sized vessels are far better. These offer protection from rain or sun, and a small deck up front where you can truly enjoy the majestic surroundings. The practicalities
  • Toilets are available on the main Li River cruise boats but, generally, not on the other two types of vessel. Of course, the boat can pull into shore if required.
  • Take sufficient
drinking water, and some snacks if you are on a longer trip. Lunch is served on the Li River cruise boats but is not to everyone's taste.
  • The sun can be fierce and you should take a hat and sun-cream, and preferably some long-sleeved clothing.
  • Take plenty of film or batteries for your camera. You will want to take lots of photos and/or video.
You will probably only take one boat trip on the Li River. Make it a special event and the memories will be with you for a very
long time.
