Invercargill and Catlins: A Great Southern Outdoors of New Zealand

By: David Di Cristo - Article Submitted on: 2008-08-12

If you wish to do a sightseeing New Zealand holiday to experience the wonderful landscape and scenic beauty of this country, then visiting the southland in the souther part of NZ is essential.

The world's most southerly city, Invercargill, is full of warm-hearted people with friendly faces, as well as elegant buildings, neat gardens and tree-filled parks. It's the gateway to the "great Southern Outdoors" some of New Zealand's most beautiful and contrasting scenery in the Catlins coast, Fiordland National Park and Stewart Island. The pyramid-shaped art gallery and museum houses a tuatarium, where one can watch the rare tuatara. The Roaring Forties Sub-Antarctic AV is one attraction worth looking out for.

East of Invercargill is the Catlins Coast and Catlins Forest Park an area which is as unfamiliar to many New Zealanders as it is to visitors. Upon visiting the Catlins, it's hard to see why. The area is a veritable wonderland of natural history, geology, flora and fauna.

The rugged coast is home to a variety of marine life, some of which is quite rare or even endangered elsewhere. Species include hooker sea-lions, Hector's dolphins and hoiho, or yellow eyed penguin. An interesting geological feature of the Catlins Coast is the Cathedral Caves, so called because of their resemblance to a large cathedral. Here one can see the imprint of fossilised trees and shells which are hundreds of millions of years old.

The Catlins region also offers numerous walks, including many which are short and easy to negate, and which take in waterfalls, blowholes and suspension bridges. Some venture into dense forest to reveal a wide variety of bird life.

Finding accommodation in New Zealand is not difficult. You should at least find a motel in towns or suburbs with a population of a few hundred people.
