Selangor is one of Malaysia's most modern and cutting edge states, located on the Malacca Strait nearby the capital city of Kuala Lumpur. Selangor's main airport is one of Malaysia's primary international tourism hubs with regular routes to neighbouring nations as well as domestic flights. The infrastructure in Selangor is highly developed making getting about a breeze!

Selangor's capital city is Shah Alam - a city of prowess and beauty, but also a contrast of the old and the new. Culture here is combined with prosperity to create a fantastic getaway destination for western tourists. One of the finest religious structures in the world is to be found here - the Sultan Salahuhddin Abdul Aziz Shah Mosque. With its graceful, colourful and soaring minarets this building is one to cherish. It is also a fine example of the wonders eastern architecture has to offer.

At just 25 kilometres from Kuala Lumpur, there is no excuse not to soak up Shah Alam's sights and sounds on an international trip! Just 13km north of KL you'll find the breathtaking Batu caves. These caves are sacred to Malaysia's Hindu population who embark on a pilgrimage to pay respect to a shrine. The Cathedral Cave in particular is always buzzing with activity, typically lined by devotees during the festival of Thaipusam. To take in this beautiful traditional event it is best to visit around January time!

A mere fifteen minutes from Shah Alam you'll discover Malaysia's Agriculture Park. This park is a spectacle to behold due to the diverse range of natural and farming habitats and resources including palm trees, paddy fields and rainforest. A trip here is great for nature enthusiasts and the whole family alike thanks to its range of engaging workshops, trails, exhibits and demos. A great way to get around here whilst respecting the environment is via bicycle. For overnight stays you can also book a chalet at a very affordable day and embark on an exciting fishing trip the very next morning!

This is also the perfect escape from neighbouring Kuala Lumpur. Whilst KL's offerings are wonderful - be it accommodation, shopping or cuisine, sometimes we need a holiday to relax and recharge our batteries. The beauty of Selangor's landscape is you can escape the high rise buildings in a matter of minutes and be on your way to tranquillity in no time at all!

Historically, Selangor thrived due to booming trade routes. This industry centred on the Klang River and the profitable Port Klang. For old fashioned architecture and for relics of this country's rich and varied past you should definitely explore this region of Selangor. Be sure to take time to visit Gedung Raja Abdullah - this is one of Malaysia's oldest buildings and is a fabulous exhibit of urban growth and traditional architecture.

Other must-try activities here include fun jungle trekking and bird watching. Some of the species here are rare and beautiful. Some varieties such as the Sandpiper will leave you hooked on this enjoyable pastime, leaving you wanting more and more!
