Koh Chang: Thailand's Hidden TreasureBY: tiya kanchanachayphoom | Category: ASIA | Submitted: 2010-07-23 01:23:11
Thailand is an interesting country that catches the eye of people all over the world. Travelers visit Thailand every year for different reasons such as finding new experiences, seeking for fun and entertainment, and searching for jobs. Thailand has always been called the land of smiles, known for renowned hospitality services. It is a very beautiful country, however many travelers only know about certain areas such as Bangkok, Phuket, and Cheng mai. Growing up in Thailand, I have experienced the unique beauty of different areas of the country. I feel that it is a shame that many other parts of Thailand are not promoted more to travelers. These areas are also very beautiful and offer different kinds of activities. One place I would like to introduce you to is an island that many people don't know about: Koh Chang. "Koh" means island and "Chang" means elephant. The reason it is called elephant island is because it is the second largest island after Koh Phuket. Koh Chang is situated in the eastern part of Thailand. It is 429 square kilo meters and is located in the city of Trat. The island is very famous for its waterfalls, white sand beaches, and reefs. It also contains a lot of mountains and stone cliffs. Since Koh Chang is very close to Bangkok, the weather is very similar. There are three seasons in Koh Chang just like in Bangkok, divided into the cool season, hot season, and rainy season. Koh Chang is perfect for the type of person who is looking to relax or do activities such as scuba dive, wild life, sight seeing, biking, elephant trekking and kayaking. If you are planning a short trip, Koh Chang is a also great choice for you. Since the island is smaller, you can see it in a shorter period of time. This island is the one of the national parks in Thailand. You can experience the beautiful scenery of the nature of Thailand in a clean and quiet environment. The reason that Koh Chang is nicer than the other islands is because it was recently developed in 2002. Since not many people know about Koh Chang, a traveler can experience authentic Thai culture. If you want to take a break from relaxing on the beach, here are some activities that you can do: Hiking. This is very popular among tourists. You can always find good hiking trails on this island. Most trails will lead you to beautiful water falls. Elephant rides. There are quite a few places that you can go elephant riding. These elephants are trained by professionals so they are not dangerous to people. Scuba Diving. There are many scuba diving schools on the island. You can also get a scuba certificate. Snorkeling and fishing. Since the waves are not very high, many people enjoy snorkeling and fishing. Thai cooking classes. There are many Thai cooking schools that you can go to on the island. Most of the lessons will be taught by teachers that are fluent in English. Internet cafe. At Koh Chang, you can stay in touch with anyone because there are a lot of internet cafés. To make your maximize your experience at Koh Chang, these are some recommendations that I think you may want to consider before visiting the island: Check the when the ferry is scheduled to go to the island. Ferries normally leave early in the morning and do not return until the next day. Bring cash, but not too much. A lot of places don't provide credit card services, however you don't want to carry too much cash with you in case you loose your wallet. Leave your passport in the hotel room. If you carry your passport and loose your purse, you may get into trouble. Plan what you want to do each day. To avoid spending too much money on taxis, take time to choose the destinations you want to visit. Some places may be farther away than you expect and you don't want to spend too much money on the taxi ride. One last thing to consider, is that you make sure to bring your summer clothing because the island is always hot. Koh Chang is a very beautiful, peaceful and safe island. It is suitable for someone who wants to relax somewhere quiet or for a family going to enjoy a vacation with a reasonable price. If you plan your trip carefully, I am sure that you will have an amazing time during your vacation.
