Kenya Wildebeest Migration SafariBY: Maya Ballesteros | Category: AFRICA | Submitted: 2010-07-03 15:27:20
Every year, in Kenya, the wildebeest migration brings thousands of tourists. It is a truly unique experience; something that many tourists never saw before. Usually, the best spot to go is Masai Mara, located in the southern part of Kenya. This place is situated right in the middle of a huge savanna, with local vegetation supporting the high number of wild animals. The wildebeest migration is taken place from August until November, period providing the most spectacular show presenting more than two millions herbivores searching for greener pastures, while savanna season changes. The best time for you to go for a safari is from June until August, when you are able to surprise the Grumeti River crossing. When the migration starts, the wildebeests are moving away and many predators follow them. It is a way in finding new "homes" and, in the same time, a chase for life, as many wildebeests are hunted down. Predators such as crocodiles, hyenas, cheetahs, leopards and ferocious African lions accompany all those moving herbivores. In their rush, they are crossing large valleys and many rivers. The predators are enjoying their meals, hunting especially the young, the old, weak or sick wildebeests. Nothing compares with observing the frightened wildebeests crossing rivers, while they are rushing, kicking each other, in their desperate attempt to get the first out from the dangerous waters, on the other side. This makes crocodiles very happy, as they are there to hunt and this is the best occasion ever. Once the migratory species arrived to Masai Mara, they remain there until the end of November, when, gradually, they are going to return to Serengeti. Masai Mara is a national wildlife reserve, being in the same time the most renowned game park within the area. Neighbored by Tanzania, this park is smaller than any other Kenyan National Park, but it is presenting the largest range of wildlife. As well, it is one of the most popular safari destinations. It is situated next to Serengeti, a wonderful location, with large plains. Along its territory runs Mara River, where you can observe crocodiles and hippos, which make the migration an even more difficult task. Masai Mara can be reached by air or road, being situated just one hundred sixty-eight miles away from Nairobi, the capital city of Kenya. If you choose the road trip, you should be prepared for a six hours journey, as the local roads are quite rough. As well, it is a good idea to visit this region in the dry season, as during the rainy season most roads are just impracticable. The raining season is during the late spring period, in April and May. Most of the tourists prefer to book a fly, thing that makes the safari quite an expensive adventure. The local flying agencies offer daily trips to Masai Mara, and the flight is for about forty-five minutes. Besides this location, you can choose from other renowned safaris, as Tsavo east and Tsavo west presenting especially elephants, Lake Nakuru National Park offering wonderful scenery with its flamingo's clouds, Amboseli National Park, Samburu National Park and many others. What is truly amazing about these African locations is that they offer you the possibility of immortalizing on films the wild life with al of its African species. Usually, in Kenya you can choose between different safaris. For example, Safari Big Five offers you the chance to watch elephants, buffaloes, leopards, rhinoceros and lions, which are very numerous over there. As well, you can observe baboons, cheetah, hyenas, giraffes and many herbivores, as zebras or antelopes. More, the most waited moment is when predators are following the prey and when they attack. It is a very impressive scene, but not for sensitive people. The best safaris in Kenya include wildlife, sport, beach, adventure and scenic safaris. If you opt spending your vacation choosing one of them, you are going to have the vacation of your life.
